The large courthouse on the hill can be seen for miles as you approach the town. Members of the historical society were dressed in period outfits and proudly described the history of this area dating back to The nearby three-story John Ruckman house was a treat to visit. Built init is constructed of Florida cypress lumber, which is why the building has lasted so many years. Back on the road again, about five miles away is the town of Panna Maria Polish for Virgin Marywhere we met Elaine Moczygemba who was gracious to show us the beautiful Immaculate Conception Church.
This town is now home to a mere people, but is on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest permanent Polish settlement in America! The first polish settlers arrived here in and celebrated mass on Christmas Eve of that same year under the large oak tree sitting in the present-day church yard. Continuing on through Cestohowa another Polish settlement and through more rolling hills to Stockdale, where we turned west toward Sutherland Springs. This small town of people is another authentic Texas ghost town.
Rosanky (TX) Swap Meet
Established in as the Wilson county seat, the town was famous for its nearly sulphur and mineral springs in the area. These springs were used for curing all sorts of ailments and the US army even used the waters for recuperating soldiers during WWI.
Special thanks to all the volunteers at the Sutherland Springs Museum for their time and stories about this interesting area.
After Sutherland Springs, we headed back to San Antonio, arriving just after 6pm.
